Culture and history

Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Dordogne can then continue searching for accommodation. The Vézère Valley World Heritage area in Dordogne comprises more than 150 Palaeolithic sites and around thirty decorated caves. The World Heritage area also includes 15 prehistoric sites documenting dense Palaeolithic settlement. The decorated caves of the Vézère Valley include Lascaux; its paintings contain around one hundred depictions of animals. Some caves in the World Heritage area are closed to the public, and access is controlled because of their vulnerability.

Périgueux, Bergerac and Sarlat bear the designation Villes d’Art et d’Histoire. In Dordogne-Périgord, more than 190 listed or classified sights and monuments are also recorded for visitors. The Musée national de Préhistoire in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac traces human evolution through collections of tools, sculptures and prehistoric works of art. The Centre International de l’Art Pariétal presents an almost 150-metre-long gallery with around 2,500 painted or engraved depictions of animals.

The historic sites also have their own distinctive features: Monpazier is one of the best-preserved bastides in south-western France and has a main square lined with arcades. Dordogne-Périgord encompasses 1001 castles from various historical periods, as well as around fifty museums and around forty parks and gardens. Château de Beynac-et-Cazenac is a medieval fortress perched on a cliff. Between Sarlat and Bergerac, the Dordogne Valley combines prehistoric caves, vineyards and medieval bastides.

Landscape and nature

Dordogne is characterised by forests, rivers and rural areas with a high degree of natural character. The basin of the Dordogne Valley is classified as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The Vézère Valley became a Grand Site de France in 2020. The Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park contains preserved landscapes with diverse fauna and flora.

The landscape takes different forms. The Dronne runs through the canals of Brantôme. The gorges of the Auvézère are described as remaining wild. Dordogne’s natural mosaic encompasses heathland and grasslands shaped by Mediterranean influences, wetlands and mixed forests.

Active pursuits

Canoeing is part of the leisure profile of Dordogne-Périgord. Flow Vélo is a family-friendly cycle route along a greenway trail. Stations bearing the Accueil Vélo label give particular attention to cycle tourists.

Food and events

Dordogne-Périgord is associated with truffles, foie gras, confits, magrets, walnuts, porcini mushrooms, strawberries, apples, chestnuts and Bergerac wines. Producers’ markets offer opportunities to find regional products from Dordogne-Périgord. Festivals, exhibitions, performances, celebrations and sporting events are held throughout the year.
