Saint-Aulaye: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

In Saint-Aulaye, the Musée du Pastel presents a permanent exhibition featuring paintings acquired by the municipality, temporary exhibitions by French and international artists, and reproductions of works by internationally renowned artists. A film about the production of Girault pastels is also shown there.

Culture

The ruins of a keep attest that the medieval Château de Saint-Aulaye was built by the lords of Saint-Aulaye in the 10th and 11th centuries. The château cannot normally be visited because it now houses the town hall; exceptions are made in summer for guided tours with commentary and during events such as “Châteaux en Fête” or the “Fête des Bastides”.

The bastide of Saint-Aulaye was founded in 1288 by Pierre Brémond. Its cobbled streets lead to a 12th-century Romanesque church. The pilgrimage route from Tours to Santiago de Compostela, the Via Turonensis, also passes through the Saint-Aulaye area.

The Musée du Cognac et du Vin displays an 18th-century still and a twin-screw press. Along a chronological tour, it explains the work of the distiller, cellar master, winegrower and cooper.

Water

The Plage des bords de Dronne is a landscaped sandy beach on the banks of the Dronne, with play equipment for children. Swimming is supervised there in July and August; there is also a separate swimming area for young children.

During the summer season, HDM Canoë rents out canoes, pedal boats and paddleboards and offers excursions on the Dronne.

Trails

There are three cycle routes for exploring the area around Saint-Aulaye, measuring 24 km, 8.5 km and 7.5 km. The Circuit de la Bastide is one of the “10 most beautiful hiking trails in the Périgord”; it also features a fun treasure hunt organised by Terra Aventura.

The Harrison Barker land and water trail passes through Saint-Aulaye.

The Dronne is considered rich in wildlife and plant life and is of interest to anglers and nature lovers.
