Villars: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Grotte de Villars is one of the largest underground cave systems in the Périgord; almost 13 km have been explored there so far. It contains prehistoric paintings created around 20,000 years ago, including a rare depiction of a bison and a human.

Culture and History

The Église Saint-Martial is listed as a historic monument; part of the northern wall of its nave dates from the 12th century. The church also preserves defensive features, a Renaissance portal and traces of 17th-century wall paintings.

The Château de Puyguilhem also combines various historical periods: construction of a Renaissance residence began there in the 16th century. The château can be visited all year round. The ruins of the Abbaye de Boschaud are also located in the immediate vicinity of Villars, as is the historic site of the Abbaye de la Peyrouse in the area around Villars. The historic site of the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Ligueux is likewise located nearby; the Château de Borie-Petit is situated in the wider regional surroundings of Villars.

Paths and Circular Routes

A hiking trail called the Sentier des Lavoirs, approximately 10 km long, has been created within the municipality of Villars. The Boucle de Villars is an easy, 9 km circular hiking route that takes around three hours.

Prehistoric Discoveries

The Jardin préhistorique de la grotte de Villars is part of the surroundings of the Grotte de Villars. It offers quizzes, botanical panels and reconstructions of prehistoric camps and animals as playful educational activities. The Jardin préhistorique de la grotte de Villars is also a landscaped 700-metre-long trail presenting Cro-Magnon people.

Events

The Abbaye de Boschaud hosts concerts, choral singing and theatrical performances.
