Market and local produce
The Marché couvert de Sarlat is located in the former Sainte-Marie Church, dating from the 12th century. The covered market has stalls selling local produce.
History and architecture
In 1964, Sarlat was one of the first ten protected sectors in France. The Cathédrale Saint-Sacerdos was originally a Romanesque abbey church from the 12th century and became a cathedral in the 14th century. It contains 12th-century choir stalls, altarpieces from the 17th and 18th centuries, and an 18th-century organ by Jean-François Lépine.
The Lanterne des Morts stands in the former Saint-Benoît cemetery in Sarlat and was built in the 12th century. It features unusual Romanesque architecture with a slender cylindrical tower, a stone cone and a rare interior dome. The Lanterne des Morts can be viewed free of charge all year round from the Jardin des Enfeus; its interior cannot be visited.
The Manoir de Gisson is classified as a historic monument and is the only building in the medieval town of Sarlat that visitors can enter.
The glass lift at the Sainte-Marie Church, created by Jean Nouvel, leads to the top of the bell tower. From there, it offers a 360-degree view over the medieval town of Sarlat and its surroundings.
