Périgueux: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Périgueux is home to Saint-Front Cathedral, a building constructed between 1125 and 1150 that became the cathedral of Périgueux in 1669. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Greek cross, complemented by five large domes.

Culture

Jardin des Arènes is a public garden surrounding the remains of an amphitheatre built in the 1st century AD, which later became a medieval fortress. Parc de Vésone is a garden laid out around the ancient Tower of Vésone.

Parc Gamenson was acquired by the city of Périgueux in 1912, designed as an open-air theatre, and inaugurated in 1913 by President of the Republic Raymond Poincaré. Numerous steles and statues there honour the troubadours Bertran de Born and Girault de Borneil, as well as writers from the Dordogne department.

Hôtel Gamenson, also known as Logis Saint-Front, is a protected town house dating from the 15th or early 16th century, with a polygonal stair tower and a Renaissance fountain. Domus de Vésone was inhabited from the 1st to the 3rd century AD and comprised rooms heated by hypocausts, a kitchen, reception rooms and baths.

Tour Mataguerre preserves details of military architecture, including machicolations, embrasures and gun ports. It is also the last surviving remnant of Périgueux's medieval fortifications.

Vesunna displays archaeological collections and models relating to the ancient city and the everyday life of the Petrocorii. Built over the remains of the Gallo-Roman house Domus de Vésone, it presents the Roman origins of Périgueux.

Guided roof tours of Saint-Front Cathedral offer a close-up view of its architecture and panoramas over the city. The Terra Aventura treasure hunt at Vesunna leads visitors through the ancient city on a route featuring clues and puzzles to a treasure. The Musée d’Art et d’Archéologie du Périgord organises conferences, discovery workshops and scavenger hunts for various target groups.

Market

The Périgueux market takes place in the historic centre and brings together more than 100 local producers. Local products such as strawberries, truffles and caviar are available.

Nature

The Voie Verte runs on both sides of Périgueux along the River Isle and can be used on foot, by bicycle or by scooter. Along the route, information boards provide details about historical, natural and heritage sites. There are also rest areas and play facilities for families.
