Landscape and water

History and culture
The private tithe barn of Bigaroque dates from the 13th century and served as a customs post and resting place for the cargo barges travelling along the Dordogne. In the village of Bigaroque, old houses descend the steep slope towards the river; its paths offer views of the Dordogne Valley and the former castellany.
The Church of Saint-Martin du Coux preserves a Romanesque choir from the 11th or 12th century. It also has a rectangular bell gable with four round-arched sound openings. Its altarpiece comes from the former Fongauffier Abbey and is listed in the inventory of historic monuments. The remains of a Gallo-Roman villa were discovered next to the church of Le Coux in 1891.
Palaeolithic and Mousterian traces, including worked flint tools, were identified in the Saint-Georges quarry. The excavation of the Eybral burial cave confirms its archaeological importance; skulls bearing traces of successfully performed trepanations were found there.
The Château de Monsec is a castle dating from the 14th and 19th centuries, set in a park with century-old trees above the Dordogne Valley. It stands on the remains of a Gallo-Roman oppidum and rises almost 80 metres above the river.
Getting around
The Boucle de l’Aurival hiking route begins at the information board in the centre of the village, follows the “Le Bugue–Périgueux” direction for about 250 metres, and then turns towards Le Bru.
