Underground World
The Grotte de Tourtoirac is a crystal cave traversed by an underground river. Thanks to a lift and special adaptations, it is fully accessible to people with reduced mobility. Guided tours of the cave last approximately one hour.
Culture and History
The Eglise Abbatiale de Tourtoirac is a Romanesque abbey church with two bell towers and monastic buildings. It also includes remnants of medieval fortifications and a lapidary museum. A chapter house was recently discovered in the basement rooms of the presbytery; it is decorated with Romanesque capitals depicting dancing monks.
Another cultural attraction is the Musée des Rois d'Araucanie. It displays a collection assembled by Prince Philippe Boiry d'Araucanie, as well as authentic documents and objects from Patagonia and Araucania. The museum also tells the story of Antoine de Tounens, who was proclaimed king of Araucania and Patagonia by the Mapuche.
Hiking
The Boucle des Bories is a 10.8-kilometre moderate circular hiking trail in Tourtoirac. Its route passes by washhouses and dry-stone huts. GPX and KML files are available for exporting the route to a GPS device or another navigation device.
Water and Landscape
The Fontaine de la Clautre is a resurgence spring of the underground river of the same name. Expeditions to discover the Grotte de Tourtoirac set out from there. The spring is accompanied by a five-metre-long washhouse with a basin fed by the spring.
