Culture and History

The Moulin de Pervendoux, a watermill on the river, is located on the Auvézère in Génis. The mill once had four pairs of millstones; one pair of grain millstones remains.

Modest remains of the castle near Moruscles have survived. Traces of fortifications can still be seen today along the Chemin des Anglais, which is maintained by Pays d'Auvézère. Near Moruscles on the Dalon, a small fortified castle is said to have stood on a nearby hill in the 9th century; an embankment created a water-filled moat around the fortification.

The Fontaine Saint-Gilles can still be seen today at the edge of the road to Salagnac; it was restored as part of the local heritage.

The Atelier du Brin d'herbe in Génis offers pottery courses and workshops for adults, as well as parent-child sessions, throughout the year. In July and August, these include introductions to pottery and working on the potter's wheel; on Tuesdays, workshops for adults are held in ceramics, mandala and land art.

The Château de Hautefort is located in the vicinity of Génis. The Abbaye de Dalon and the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Dalon are also nearby. Further afield in the region are the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Ligueux and the Puy d'Yssandon.

Nature

The rare fern Anogramma leptophylla has been recorded at Pervendoux and La Roche Pécout in Génis; it is protected throughout Aquitaine. The gametophyte of Vandenboschia speciosa (synonym: Trichomanes speciosum Willd.) has been recorded in the Dalon Valley in the municipality of Génis; the species is protected throughout France.

The Auvézère Valley near Génis is home to remarkable botanical sites, including orchids, royal ferns, wood anemones and wild hyacinths.

Hiking and Water

The Rand'Auvézère comprises three signposted hiking routes. Its program includes morning routes of 14 km and 11 km, a shared afternoon route of 7 km, and a family route of 6 km.

The 35th Rand'Auvézère is a numbered hiking event held in Génis.

The upstream section of the Auvézère as far as Génis is reserved exclusively for kayaking accompanied by professionals when the water level is sufficient.
