Mouleydier: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Mouleydier lies with its houses on a hillside above the right bank of the Dordogne. The medieval La Castelle castle was besieged and destroyed by Du Guesclin in 1375 during the Hundred Years’ War.
History
A square well remains as a surviving trace of the La Castelle fortress. The bridge over the Dordogne was built between 1840 and 1850.
The former fish weirs of Mouleydier are documented in a census dated 22 November 1794, in which Jean Delmas, known as “Carelle”, is mentioned as a fisherman who worked in the caves. The former fish weirs of Mouleydier are probably unique in the Dordogne Valley.
The Tuilières lock complex, including the junction basin, the upper and lower bridges, and the façades and roofs of the upstream and downstream lock keeper’s houses, was listed as a historic monument by decree dated 11 September 1996.
Cycling
The Véloroute/Voie verte from Bergerac to Lalinde, which follows the former towpath, has been open to pedestrians and cyclists since summer 2019. The V91 Voie verte runs from the Tuilières locks to Mauzac along the Canal de Lalinde.
Water
The side canal of the Dordogne at Tuilières was commissioned in 1844 so that barges could avoid the shallows at Lalinde. The Tuilières flight of locks stretches over 289 metres and overcomes a difference in elevation of 22 metres.
The Tuilières fish lift was built in 1989 and is equipped with a viewing window. An additional 1.5-hour trip by the Gabarres de Bergerac departs from the port of Creysse upon reservation and passes through the village of Mouleydier with its fish weirs to the port of Tuilières, with its seven-lock flight of locks, fish lift and hydroelectric power station.
Anyone planning a trip to Mouleydier may perhaps want to rent a holiday apartment there.
