Culture
The Église de la Transfiguration is an 11th-century building that was remodelled in the 12th century and formerly stood next to Payzac’s feudal castle. By decree of 17 October 1995, it was partially listed as a Monument historique.
In Payzac, the Pont de Laveyra crosses the Auvézère. Two semicircular arches support a centrally arranged pointed arch; pedestrian refuges are located on the piers. During repairs in the 19th century, the twisted spire of the Église de la Transfiguration was covered with slate.
History
From the 17th century onwards, mills, forges and paper mills developed along the Auvézère in Payzac as part of the local economic history. The Papeterie de Vaux is a former 17th-century forge that was converted in 1861 into an industrial paper mill producing straw paper. It has a 800 m² museum area and is located on the Ruisseau des Belles Dames, a tributary of the Auvézère.
The Papeterie de Vaux can be visited independently or with a tablet.
Nature and Trails
Signposted trails for hiking on foot begin in Payzac. The Boucle des Papetiers, a 16 km circular route, also starts here.
Trout fishing is possible at the Pisciculture du Moulin du Châtain.
