Urval: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The historic centre of Urval forms a rare and well-preserved ensemble of medieval structures. The Church of Urval underwent its main construction phases in the 12th and 13th centuries. A square tower with loopholes rises above the nave; the raised apse was also used to fortify the church. By decree of 9 June 1926, the church was listed as a monument historique.

Culture and history

The Four banal of Urval dates from the 14th century and was listed as a monument historique in 1941. It is a very rare example of medieval rural architecture. The Four banal is used two or three times a year during village festivals, particularly during the European Heritage Days. Visitors can watch bread being baked there and then buy bread.

The Church of Notre Dame de la Nativité in Urval is associated with religious and cultural activities such as concerts, exhibitions and lectures.

Location and landscape

Urval is located in the south of the Dordogne département, west of the Périgord Noir, between the river and the Bessède forest. The area around Urval is characterised by a hilly, heavily wooded landscape with numerous clearings.

Hiking

There are two signposted circular hiking trails of the PDIPR in the area of Urval. In 2024, one of these circular trails received the award “Les 10 plus beaux sentiers du Périgord”.

The long-distance hiking trail Chemin d’Amadour (GR81) connects Soulac-sur-Mer with Rocamadour, is 500 km long and consists of 21 stages. Urval welcomed hikers during the lunch break of the Cadouin–Belvès stage of the Chemin d’Amadour.
