Villac: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

At Villac, the Elle Valley narrows into a deep gorge between high, steep rocky slopes; there, the Elle flows over shale slabs. Villac is often called “La Rouge” because of its red sandstone buildings.

Culture and history

The Church of Saint-Waast is listed as a historic monument. Its main construction phase dates from the Middle Ages. Romanesque sculptures can be found in the portal porch, on the modillions and on the capitals of the choir.

The Saint-Vaast fountain in Villac dates from 1870. The Feast of Saint Vaast is celebrated in Villac every year in February and includes a pilgrimage.

Local tradition also includes the Pierre du Bénitier, a stone hollowed out in the shape of a basin with a groove.

Landscape and geology

In Villac, the local geology transitions from the limestones of Guern and Escaleyrou, through the coal-bearing sandstones of Charpenet, to bluish-green shale rock.

The Grotte de la Sudrie can be visited on request through the Les Amis de Villac association.

Nature and cycling

Mouflons live in the forests around Villac. The Le Lardin–Excideuil stage of La Flow Vélo also runs through the Elle Valley near Villac.
