Culture and history

The tourist office is located in the former Saint-Jean Hospital, dating from the 14th century. The Prieuré Saint Georges also dates from this period: it was built as a chapel for the neighbouring Saint-Jean Hospital, located 30 metres away, and today hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events.

A medieval street in Montignac is lined with half-timbered houses dating from the 13th century and is considered particularly picturesque. At Lascaux IV, guided tours with a mediator take place in the morning and afternoon; at lunchtime, a self-guided tour with an audioguide is available. The viewpoint at Lascaux IV offers a view of the Vézère Valley, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Trails and water

The circular route “Montignac – promenade de Lascaux” is 7 kilometres long, begins at the tourist office and is designed to take walkers around two hours. Another circular route, “Dans les pas des inventeurs de Lascaux”, runs for 4.5 kilometres through Montignac-Lascaux and follows in the footsteps of the discoverers of the Grotte de Lascaux.

For water-based activities, the Lascaux Canoë base is located in the heart of Montignac-Lascaux, 400 metres from Lascaux IV. Four routes ranging from 4 to 17 kilometres are available for canoes seating two to five people, as well as kayaks and stand-up paddleboards with no time limit.

Market and surroundings

At the Montignac-Lascaux market, local producers are represented on Quai Mérilhou, Place Carnot and the surrounding streets. The Grotte de Lascaux cave is located in the immediate vicinity of Montignac. The Village troglodytique de La Madeleine cave is also located in the vicinity of Montignac.

In the wider regional area around Montignac are the ancient site of Abris de Laugerie-Basse. Also located there are the historic site of Cabanes Du Breuil, Château de Hautefort, and the caves Grotte des Combarelles and Grotte de Font-de-Gaume.
