History

The castrum of Belvès dates back to the 11th century. The Château de Belvès preserves the only monumental programme on the subject of the Nine Worthies known to date in Aquitaine. Notre-Dame de l'Assomption is a Gothic church built on the site of a former Benedictine monastery. Exceptional murals from the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries were uncovered during interior restoration work at Notre-Dame de l'Assomption.

Sightseeing

The Château de Belvès offers guided tours by appointment for groups of at least four people. The castrum can be visited independently all year round; a town map provided by the tourist office is available for this purpose. The castrum can also be explored on a 50-minute walking tour.

Les Troglos de Belvès comprises eight underground dwellings beneath the Place de la Halle in the medieval centre of Belvès. A guided tour of Les Troglos de Belvès takes visitors six metres underground and provides insights into the daily lives of the farmers who inhabited the site 800 years ago.

The Boucle de la Pierre route begins in the village of Belvès.

A market is held on the Place d'Armes in Belvès on Saturday mornings.
