Culture

The Château de Saussignac was built on the foundations of an older Gallo-Roman villa; elements of this villa are still preserved in the vaulted lower sections. Its façade on the north pavilion is influenced by the Renaissance. The south pavilion is older and simpler, with narrower and fewer openings.

Construction of the Château de Saussignac spanned the reigns of Charles IX, Henri III, Henri IV and Louis XIII. The Tours de Lenvège were built around 1250 and were the seat of the first Barony of Saussignac. The castle of Lenvège was attacked in 1345 by the Count of Derby and defended by Hélie Ferdinand II, Seigneur d’Estissac, together with a troop of soldiers belonging to Du Guesclin.

Landscape

The Boucle de Saussignac combines a visit to the centre of Saussignac, with its château, church and characterful houses, with a hike through vineyards and meadows. The historic variant of the Way of St. James via Bergerac passes through the vineyards of Bergerac and Saussignac and runs across scenic slopes.

The nearest SNCF railway station is in Gardonne, five minutes from the village. The Bordeaux–Bergerac–Sarlat line serves numerous stations along a scenic route through the Dordogne Valley.

Wine

The Château de Fayolle has a wine tourism area with a tasting room, shop, café and outdoor terrace. Around 1480, Jean de Fayolle began constructing the Château de Fayolle, starting with the stair tower.
