Discover Vanxains: History, Landscapes and Holiday Accommodation
Vanxains on the Edge of the Double
Vanxains lies on the edge of the Double. The village opens up travel planning in which culture, activities, nature and regional shopping can all be combined.
Church Art and Historic Buildings
The Church of Notre-Dame de la Nativité was built at the end of the 11th century and consecrated in 1147. It combines Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements, including a three-bay nave, sculpted capitals, a barrel vault, a richly sculpted chancel, a pendentive dome and a staircase running through a pillar. Guided tours were scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon in July and August.
Although the Château de La Brangélie was rebuilt, it retains two 13th-century towers. The Château Trompette was built in the 19th century by the de Laage family on the site of an older farm.
The north-eastern tower of the Château Trompette has a hipped roof covered with Flemish tiles. Another square tower stands in the middle of the southern façade and has a low-pitched tiled roof. This historic village setting is complemented by the Cluzeau de Vanxains, a man-made medieval defensive cave with several rooms that has remained practically intact thanks to protective layers of rubble.
Circular Trail and Natural Area
The Boucle de Vanxains starts at the Place de la Mairie in Vanxains. The circular walking trail is 14 km long and has a moderate difficulty level. The starting point, length and difficulty level provide a concrete basis when you want to include an active day in your travel plans.
The section of the Vallée de la Dronne Natura 2000 site near Vanxains covers 14.8 hectares of natural habitats of European interest. In addition to walking, this makes observing natural landscapes an independent focus.
Food and Special Insights
The La Bélaudie Havard shop in Vanxains offers fresh produce, cured meats and preserves. At La Bélaudie Havard, guided tours of the premises followed by a free tasting were organised at 5 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays in July and August. These two aspects give your plans a concrete connection to the village’s food products.
The Aéroclub École de Pilotage ULM 3 axes et Avion Jean Mermoz is based at Ribérac–Vanxains airfield. For aviation enthusiasts, this permanent local feature adds another distinct aspect to the historical and landscape themes.
