The Château de Mavaleix was probably built in the 13th century and rebuilt in the 16th century. It has been listed as a historic monument since 16 December 1947. It lies within the Valouze catchment area and overlooks the cascades and the former forge sites supplied by this river.
Culture
The Ancienne forge de Mavaleix is part of Chalais's history. In the second half of the 16th century, it supplied iron for the manufacture of cannons and bombs; it ceased operations in 1860. The façades and roofs of its residential buildings on cadastral plot AI 100 were listed as protected monuments by decree of 13 March 1972.
The Church of Saint Agnan is the most important monument in the centre of Chalais. It existed by 1192 at the latest. The choir and the crossing of its bell tower date from the late 11th or very early 12th century.
