Michel de Montaigne was born at the Château de Montaigne, where he also wrote the “Essays”. The Château de Montaigne in Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne is classified as a historic monument.

After several fires, the Château de Montaigne was completely rebuilt in 1884. The Tour de la Librairie is the only surviving part of the former Château de Montaigne. The chapel where Montaigne had his children baptised is located on the ground floor of the Tour de la Librairie.

The 19th-century Château can only be visited as part of a guided tour and by prior reservation.

History

The Église Saint-Michel was built in the 12th century on Romanesque foundations. Its western portal shows stylistic influences from the Saintonge region.

After Montaigne’s death in 1592, his widow Françoise de La Chassagne had his heart buried in the chapel of the Église Saint-Michel; his body was taken to Bordeaux, to the church of the Feuillants.

The “Chez Montaigne...” route includes a viewpoint over the Lidoire Valley and the gardens surrounding the Château de Montaigne.

The Domaine de Perreau Escape Game takes place at a wine estate. During opening hours, the Domaine de Perreau offers tours of the wine cellar and vineyards, followed by a wine tasting.
