Abjat-sur-Bandiat between nature and local history

Abjat-sur-Bandiat lies at the heart of the Périgord-Limousin Regional Nature Park. The Bandiat runs through the municipality between rocks, cascades and weirs. The municipality has granite subsoil as well as oak and chestnut forests. Abjat-sur-Bandiat includes historic fountains, springs and washhouses. Trails

Circular trail no. 1 starts at the Syndicat d’Initiative, is 6 kilometres long and takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes. Circular trail no. 2 also starts there. It covers around 10 kilometres, takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes and crosses the Bandiat. Trail 5, “La Grande Verte”, also starts at the Syndicat d’Initiative, is around 26 kilometres long and takes approximately 6 hours and 30 minutes. The three routes therefore differ considerably in length and time required. Comparing the trails allows visitors to consider separately the scope of a short circular walk, a longer route or an extended day of hiking. Their shared starting point makes it easier to get an overview of the different details, while the crossing of the Bandiat remains a distinctive feature of circular trail no. 2.

Culture and history

The Église Saint-André was listed as a historic monument by decree of 27 January 1994. The bilingual tour “L’istòria e sos ressons d’Ajac de Bandiat” explores the history and local heritage in Occitan and French. The Rocher druidique is considered a monument probably used for religious purposes and a testimony to the municipality’s earliest past. The Rocher druidique consists of a granite slab 2.30 metres long and 1.40 metres wide. The church, tour and granite slab each focus on different aspects: the Église Saint-André represents a listed historic monument, the tour combines languages with local history, and the Rocher druidique points to the municipality’s earliest past.

In Chachat, Rudy Sculpteur is a workshop and exhibition venue. Its offerings include workshop visits, sales, exhibitions, demonstrations, courses and workshops; these take place by prior appointment. “Terra Aventura: Zellé, mesfia-té...” is a puzzle adventure in which participants solve riddles using a smartphone or a route description printed out in advance and discover a solution word. Alongside historic sites, the local range of discoveries therefore also includes a workshop and a playfully designed puzzle adventure.

Local life

L’Insolite is a crêperie in the Le Bourg district of Abjat-sur-Bandiat. Its name adds a dining venue in the local area to the historic and scenic points of interest.

The details of the circular trails illustrate different day-trip distances: circular trail no. 1, circular trail no. 2 and “La Grande Verte” represent clearly distinct route lengths and times.
