The Château de Matecoulon is located in the municipality of Montpeyroux.
The church in Montpeyroux, accessible via the path along the Château de Matecoulon, is a Romanesque church dating from the 12th century. It was classified as a historic monument by decree of 26 September 1908. Its apse has nine round-arched arcades and a cornice with sculpted modillions.
The Parc de Matecoulon is a 3-hectare park described as romantic, with ornamental buildings known as fabriques. Since 25 July 2003, the park, the fabriques, the enclosing wall with its entrances, and the former faience workshop of the Château de Matecoulon have been listed as historic monuments. The Parc de Matecoulon can only be visited as part of a guided tour and by prior appointment.
In the 16th century, the Matecoulon estate belonged to Bertrand-Charles de Montaigne, Michel de Montaigne’s brother. The Tèrra-Aventura story in Montpeyroux takes place around the Château de Matecoulon, where Bertrand, Michel de Montaigne’s younger brother, lived.
