Landscapes and Nature

Particularly interesting areas of the province of Lleida include the Aigüestortes y Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, its two nature reserves, and the Pyrenean and Pre-Pyrenean landscapes. The Pyrenean and Pre-Pyrenean landscapes of the province of Lleida are popular with winter sports enthusiasts. In addition, the province of Lleida offers a wide range of opportunities for birdwatching and rural tourism.

The Mas de Melons nature reserve is a 1,431-hectare dry agricultural area in the Secans of the Lleida plain. It is home to the most significant population of sandgrouse in Catalonia, as well as other steppe birds.

Eleven routes have been established for the dryland ZEPA of the Plana de Lleida, which can be travelled by car, bicycle or on foot. Estany d'Ivars Vila-sana has a nature trail of approximately 2.6 kilometres, suitable for walking and cycling, which passes observation hides, viewpoints, rest areas, information panels and wooden footbridges. Discovery visits are offered at Estany d'Ivars Vila-sana, focusing either generally on the area or specifically on water, landscape and history, or birds.

Paths and Water

Hiking and excursions are generally permitted in Aigüestortes y Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, which has an extensive network of paths. Camins Vius circles Aigüestortes y Estany de Sant Maurici National Park via the surrounding villages, restoring historic routes through the valleys. In Planell de Aigüestortes and around Lake Sant Maurici, there are wooden footbridges suitable for wheelchair use.

Coaches travel from Lleida towards Esterri d'Àneu and Vielha, providing access to the area of Aigüestortes y Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. There is a controlled fishing area at the Utxesa Reservoir; sport and recreational fishing are also practised there.

Culture and History

The Romanesque ensemble of the Vall de Boí comprises Sant Climent and Santa Maria de Taüll, Sant Joan de Boí, Santa Eulàlia de Erill la Vall, Sant Feliu de Barruera, La Nativitat and Sant Quirc de Durro, as well as Santa Maria de Cardet and La Assumpció de Cóll. All the churches in the Romanesque ensemble in the Vall de Boí can be visited, with the exception of Sant Quirc de Durro and La Assumpció de Cóll. At Sant Climent de Taüll, a modern mapping installation reconstructs the original apse frescoes.

Astronomy and Earth History

The Montsec Astronomical Park houses a permanent interactive exhibition on astronomy and space sciences. L'Ull del Montsec has a digital planetarium with a 3D full-dome projection system capable of displaying the current sky and the sky of past eras. L'Ull del Montsec serves as a platform for direct observation of the sky; its dome and front wall can be opened completely. During the day and at night, the Montsec Astronomical Park offers activities in nature for universities, schools, families and astronomy enthusiasts.

The area of Conca de Tremp and Coll de Nargó in Geoparc Orígens is considered the most important dinosaur egg site in Europe and one of the most significant in the world. Geoparc Orígens in Lleida has been designated a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2018 and has received Starlight recognition for its particularly clear night skies. The Mont-Rebei Gorge in Geoparc Orígens is considered one of the most photogenic places; an impressive path carved into the rock runs through it, while the rock walls rise up to 500 metres above the river.

Wine and Regional Areas

The Lleida Wine Route passes through municipalities where wines bearing the DO Costers del Segre designation of origin are produced, extending from Pallars Sobirà to the fields of Segrià and Les Garrigues; it also passes through Noguera, Urgell and Pla d'Urgell. The Lleida Wine Route is divided into eight subregions.
