Salàs de Pallars is a fortified settlement with three round towers: two date from the Early Middle Ages and can be dated to the 10th or 11th century, while one dates from the Late Middle Ages.
Culture
The village has preserved the fair stalls known as eres de fira; they were used to house the animals sold at the fair. The Fira de Salàs became the most important livestock market for trading equines in the Pyrenees and continued until the third quarter of the 20th century. Since 2005, Salàs de Pallars has commemorated the former Fira de Salàs with a memorial event featuring book publications, theatrical performances and the opening of former fair areas.
Fair and museums
The Botigues Museu de Salàs display everyday consumer goods and commercial advertising from around 1870 to the end of the Franco era. They can only be visited in guided groups and exclusively by prior reservation. The Torre de Barta is a medieval tower more than 1,000 years old. It contains permanent exhibitions of restored old tools, as well as iron and stone sculptures by the artist Joan Fàbregas. The Torre de Barta also includes a bodega with winemaking tools.
Churches and gateways
The Portal de Soldevila is a medieval gateway on the eastern side of Salàs de Pallars; a cylindrical tower stands beside it. The Portal de Capdevila has a tower integrated into the urban fabric at a possible site of the former castle. The Portal del Vall is located on the northern side of the medieval centre of Salàs de Pallars. The Portal de la Solana is a small, narrow gateway on the southern side of the medieval centre of Salàs de Pallars. In the centre of the medieval town, a square bordered by arcades on three sides preserves the layout typical of the 15th century.
A document from 1395 records the consecration of the church and altar of Sant Pere de Salàs de Pallars. The parish church of Mare de Déu del Coll was built between the 17th and 18th centuries; its altar is located above Carrer Bon Jesús and is elevated by a tunnel open to the street. Sant Pere de Salàs de Pallars survives only as a chancel with three semicircular apses; the central apse was converted into a cemetery chapel. The remains of Sant Pere de Salàs de Pallars form the cemetery chapel southeast of the centre of Salàs de Pallars. The preserved walls of Sant Pere de Salàs de Pallars feature masonry characteristic of 12th-century architecture.
The programme of the Aplec de Sant Pere Màrtir includes Mass at noon in the hermitage and fire pits for cooking meat.
Water and trails
A footpath connects the village with the Piolet or Els Xalets area at the Pantà de Sant Antoni and follows former routes to the old agricultural plots. Numerous water sports and nautical activities are available in the area of the Pantà de Sant Antoni.
