Ivorra: Castle, Sanctuary and Nature

Ivorra Castle preserves a 7 × 5 metre cistern that is 4 metres high; in addition, the round tower known as the Torre del Moro has survived in good condition and reaches a height of 20 metres. The two structures represent different elements of the castle: the cistern is described by its precise rectangular ground plan and height, while the Torre del Moro is known as a round, well-preserved tower.

Culture

The walled settlement of Ivorra preserves elements of its original urban structure, including sections of wall, narrow streets and a portal with a voussoir-vaulted arch. Cal Millàs is located next to this portal, which provided access to the walled settlement, and served as the hospital of the town of Ivorra in the Middle Ages. The portal, streets and wall remains are therefore among the preserved parts of the settlement, while Cal Millàs is directly beside its former entrance.

The church of Sant Cugat in Ivorra was designed by the builder Francesc Pons, who came from Solsona. The parish church of Sant Cugat d’Ivorra houses a Gothic reliquary dating from 1462 that contains a piece of the bloodstained cloth. The name Sant Cugat thus refers both to the church in Ivorra and to the parish church in which the reliquary is preserved.

The Santuari del Sant Dubte is associated with a Eucharistic miracle dating from 1010. Its memory, documentation and relics have been preserved. The connection with the miracle and the three stated forms in which its memory has been preserved are central to the sanctuary’s tradition.

El Casalot de la Morera is also one of the prominent buildings: the rectangular defensive structure has thick walls, a stone base and an upper section made of rammed earth with blue plaster bound with lime; several loopholes are present in the complex. The construction method can be seen in the sequence of the stone base and rammed-earth upper section, while the loopholes in the thick walls are part of the structure of the complex.

Nature

The Font de La Figuera is located outside Ivorra at the Coll de la Figuera. It was built from dressed medium- and large-sized stone blocks and features a round arch made of voussoirs, forming a kind of niche; in the past, this niche housed an image of the Virgin Mary. Its location at the Coll de la Figuera and the former use of the niche as a place for an image of the Virgin Mary thus remain part of the description of the spring.

The Mirador de la plaça Major is designated as a viewpoint in Ivorra. In the area of special natural interest known as the Espai d’Interès Natural del Llobregós, there are three routes for walking or cycling. The routes are therefore expressly intended for two different means of travel, while the Mirador is designated as a viewpoint within Ivorra.

A short route around the springs of Ivorra is suggested. Its suggested character remains tied to the springs of Ivorra, distinguishing it from the three routes in the Espai d’Interès Natural del Llobregós.

Festivals

The 2024 edition of the Festa de Sant Galderic included a market of local producers and craftspeople. All participants each offered a tapa to be consumed on site. The mentioned edition thus includes both the market with its two groups of vendors and the tapa offered by each participant.

“La Farinera” is the popular name for a building on a property in Ivorra beside the LV-3003 road from Torà to St. Ramon. The building is located 1.1 kilometres before the turn-off to the village. The distance refers to the section before the turn-off, while the road connection via the LV-3003 is described in relation to Torà and St. Ramon.
