Climbing

In Abella de la Conca, there are around 300 climbing routes of all difficulty levels. Beginner routes are graded III. Projects extend to grade 9a and beyond. Esglesia, Canyon Bajo, Font de les Gotes and Panorama are considered family-friendly climbing sectors. These four sectors have short approaches and provide a level belay area. Their routes range from grade III to 8a+.

The climbing available therefore includes both introductory routes at grade III and very demanding projects beyond grade 9a. Within the four sectors mentioned, the range extends up to 8a+, while the remaining projects go beyond that level. The names Esglesia, Canyon Bajo, Font de les Gotes and Panorama identify the areas described here.

Culture and History

The origins of Abella de la Conca developed around Castell d’Abella, which was the centre of its barony in the 11th century. The remains of Castell d’Abella lie on a rock above the village. Among other features, a wall approximately 13 metres long has been preserved. Sant Esteve d’Abella de la Conca is the parish church in the upper part of the old village of Abella de la Conca. The church has a basilica-style floor plan. This includes three naves and three semicircular apses. The bell tower was added during a later construction phase. It follows forms of Lombard architecture and has an independent ornamental design.

The historical traces are thus distributed between the castle ruins above the village and the parish church in the upper part of the old settlement. At Castell d’Abella, the preserved wall points to the former fortification, while Sant Esteve reveals several construction phases through its floor plan, apses and bell tower, which was added later.

Trails and Landscape

A Roman footpath leads through the village terraces. The path also passes through old olive groves. Below the village of Abella de la Conca are cooling rock pools, which the footpath leads to. The pools are therefore located as a separate destination on the path below the village.

The route connects three different landscape elements: the village terraces shaped by human activity, the old olive groves and the rock pools below Abella de la Conca. The Roman footpath brings these sections together in one continuous route.

Gallinova is listed as a peak in the immediate surroundings of Abella de la Conca. Cap de Carreu is listed as a peak in the immediate surroundings of Abella de la Conca. Pical Ras is listed as a peak in the immediate surroundings of Abella de la Conca. Cap de Plan-de-Riba is listed as a peak in the wider area around Abella de la Conca. At Coll de Comiols, there are panoramic views across the entire Conca.

The peaks mentioned are therefore located on two different spatial levels: Gallinova, Cap de Carreu and Pical Ras belong to the immediate surroundings, while Cap de Plan-de-Riba is in the wider area. Coll de Comiols adds to these landscape references with the explicitly mentioned view across the entire Conca.

Local Products

At the eighth edition of the Fira de la Mel in Abella de la Conca, there were stalls selling honey, cheese, handicrafts and other local products. Honey tastings are offered at the Fira de la Mel. The programme also includes cultural guided tours. The event includes further activities.
