El Mas de Bondia – medieval village

El Mas de Bondia is a medieval, enclosed village that developed into a small settlement with a central cul-de-sac.

The enclosed layout and the cul-de-sac describe the internal structure of the settlement. The place does not appear as a widely scattered collection of individual buildings, but rather as a clearly defined historical ensemble. The central cul-de-sac is one of the defining features of this townscape.

History

The village is located on the crest of a raised hill, which extends from east to west.

This topographical location connects the history of the village with its visible form: the settlement follows the raised crest and therefore has a recognisable longitudinal direction. A coat of arms on one of the houses attests to the Templars' rule over El Mas de Bondia.

The R17 El Mas de Bondia–Cervera bus route includes a stop in El Mas de Bondia. The village is therefore also part of a named connection between El Mas de Bondia and Cervera.

Culture

The Museu Cal Talaveró Centre d'Art, a museum, and the Museu Comarcal de l'Urgell, also a museum, are located in the surrounding area.

El Mas de Bondia is located in the Granyena PEIN (Pla Especial d’Interès Natural).

The Granyena PEIN is characterised by valleys and agricultural terraces.

In some places, the terrain of the PEIN has been altered by dry-stone walls.

The landscape thus combines natural landforms with visibly cultivated areas. Valleys and terraces form the basic structure, while the dry-stone walls intervene in this structure at certain points. The description of the landscape therefore remains closely connected with agricultural use and the shaping of the terrain.

The terraces of the Granyena PEIN are mainly used for growing cereals, almond trees, olive trees and grapevines under dry farming conditions.

The crops mentioned demonstrate the range of dry farming on the terraces: cereals grow alongside almond and olive trees as well as grapevines. Together with the valleys, walls and terraces, this creates a landscape in which geographical form and agricultural use are directly interconnected.
