Culture and History

The Capdella hydroelectric power station is located in the municipal area of La Torre de Cabdella in Pallars Jussà. It was the first major hydroelectric power station to begin operating in Catalonia and is one of the 150 essential elements of Catalonia’s industrial heritage.

The Museu Hidroelèctric de Capdella is part of the territorial system of the Museu Nacional de la Ciència i de la Tècnica de Catalunya. It is housed in a former office and doctor’s surgery building next to the Capdella hydroelectric power station and offers guided tours of various areas of the power station. The museum also organises visits and activities to explore the Castell mines.

The museum includes the cardboard hospital, considered an icon of prefabricated and ephemeral architecture. It was built more than a hundred years ago to care for people injured during the construction of the hydroelectric power station.

The Christ of Cabdella, dating from the 12th to the 13th century, comes from the Church of Sant Vicenç de Cabdella in La Torre de Cabdella in Pallars Jussà. At Sant Julià d’Espui, the square bell tower is the most clearly recognisable and best-preserved part of the Romanesque structure. The small chapel of Sant Martí in La Torre de Cabdella has a rectangular floor plan and a semicircular apse with Lombard arcades. The Romanesque Church of Sant Vicenç in Cabdella is considered one of the town’s main attractions and, from the upper part of the village, overlooks much of the valley.

Trails and Mountain Landscapes

The GR-11-20 variant of the Pyrenean Trail includes a section between Cabdella and Boí that crosses the Port de Rus. The Via Verda de la vall Fosca follows the route of a small railway that was used at the beginning of the 20th century for the construction of the hydroelectric facilities. The Pedals de Foc mountain-bike circuit passes through the Vall Fosca and has a checkpoint in La Torre de Cabdella.

The Telefèric de la Vall Fosca cable car climbs to an altitude of 2,200 metres and provides access to Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. The journey takes 14 minutes and covers an elevation difference of 450 metres. During the summer months, the Telefèric de Sallente provides access to Estany Gento. From there, various routes of different levels of difficulty lead into Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park.

There are various hiking options in La Torre de Cabdella. Ski mountaineering is also possible there.

Transport and Local Cuisine

A car is essential for travelling to La Torre de Cabdella and between the different parts of the municipality. Controlled fishing is possible in the Flamisell River and in the higher-altitude lakes around La Torre de Cabdella. Local cuisine in La Torre de Cabdella also includes river trout.
