La Granja d'Escarp – Nature, Trails and History

Where the Cinca flows through La Granja d'Escarp and joins the Segre, the Aiguabarreig Segre-Cinca natural area begins. From there, it follows the Segre to its course near Seròs.

The Aiguabarreig combines green riverside areas with the dry, barren surrounding landscape and is home to a remarkable diversity of birds. As a biological corridor, it brings together species from very different habitats; many migratory bird species breed, overwinter or stop here.

The river sections and the areas of the Aiguabarreig Segre-Cinca associated with the EIN have been protected since 1992. The protected area covers 760.96 hectares, most of which lie in the municipality of La Granja d'Escarp.

Nature

Within the municipality, the Camí Natural de l'Aiguabarreig Segre-Cinca runs along the left bank of the Segre. The river landscape can be experienced along a designated nature trail.

Mountain-bike and hiking tours are possible within the municipality, from the village at 78 metres to Punta de Montmaneu at 495 metres. Along the way, you can visit remnants of the Spanish Civil War and several disused lignite mines.

At the foot of Montmaneu, the high point is at 417 metres, while the summit reaches 494 metres; several routes allow you to explore it.

Trails

The Passera de fusta continues the Camí Natural del Riu Segre through the riverside woodland of Sant Jaume. Els Enigmes d’en Pius is set up along the Aiguabarreig nature trail as a permanent orienteering game for families.

An orienteering map, described trail markers and small clues enable visitors to explore the natural area independently, educationally and playfully at Els Enigmes d’en Pius.

The 16th Marxa Senderista del Baix Segre took place on Sunday, 15 March 2026, and offered four routes. One of them was suitable for people with reduced mobility.

Culture

The Abric del barranc de Sant Jaume belongs to the World Heritage site “Rock Paintings of La Granja d’Escarp”.

The Jaciment de la Serra del Calvari is a settlement area of approximately one hectare, with an orthogonal layout and paved streets. It is located on an approximately semicircular promontory near the confluences of the Segre and Cinca and of the Segre and Ebre.

From the Creu del Calvari sculpture ensemble, you can observe the course and confluence of the Segre and Cinca, the neighbouring villages and a large stretch of the riverside gardens.

The parish church of Sant Jaume is an 18th-century building in the neoclassical style. Its octagonal bell tower rises above the village.

The Ermita de Sant Jaume is a 17th-century chapel on the left bank of the Cinca, about one kilometre upstream from where the Cinca joins the Segre.

Route 3 – El poble i l'Ermita de Sant Jaume starts in the centre of La Granja d'Escarp and leads to the Ermita de Sant Jaume, located on a hill. From there, there are views of the confluence of the Segre and Ebre.

The complex of buildings belonging to the cement factory in La Granja d'Escarp, which opened in 1879, included lignite and limestone mines, kilns, a landing stage on the bank of the Segre and an animal-powered railway.

Traditions

The Sant Jaume festival on 25 July includes a procession with the saint and a solemn mass.

The traditional festival of married women, les Àguedes, takes place on 5 February. After mass, blessed Coca pastries are distributed, a procession in honour of Saint Àgueda is held and a dance takes place.

The sixth edition of the Nit de les Ànimes in La Granja d’Escarp included a fright tunnel, roasted chestnuts, a pumpkin workshop and “crit o confit”, the Catalan version of “trick or treat”.

The first Fira de Natura i Pesca Aiguabarreig Segre-Cinca offered family activities, including visits to the Aiguabarreig by tourist train and audioguide, as well as fishing competitions for adults and children.

The Fira de la Pesca i Natura de l'Aiguabarreig Segre-Cinca was already in its second edition and filled the village streets with numerous participants and an exceptional atmosphere.

In the village

To use the Barbacoes Municipals i Zona Pic-Nic, you must apply for a permit at the town hall and collect the keys there.

The municipal barbecue and picnic area has eight barbecue grills, two tables, stone benches, a water point and a waste bin.
