El Vilosell: Medieval Heritage, Wine and Hiking Trails

El Vilosell preserves a medieval town layout with its cobbled streets and alleyways intact. The remains of its former castle also form part of the townscape. King Alfonso I ordered the construction of El Vilosell Castle in 1177.

History and Architecture

The parish church of Santa Maria is a Baroque church. It has a single nave. This nave includes the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament and the baptistery. The parish church also preserves Romanesque foundations and remains. Its internal layout with the chapel and baptistery is part of the Baroque church structure, while the Romanesque foundations and remains point to older building elements.

The Sant Sebastià Hermitage is a Renaissance-style building. In front of the hermitage stands a Gothic stone cross from the 14th century. The building and the cross thus bring together two clearly defined historical periods and architectural styles in one place.

Landscape

The protected Serra de la Llena covers 142 hectares. This area lies within the municipal boundaries of El Vilosell.

Sant Miquel de la Tosca is a hermitage and a Baroque building near Les Fontetes. Les Fontetes is an area of natural and landscape interest within the municipal boundaries of El Vilosell. Les Fontetes is therefore defined not only by its landscape, but also by its location within the municipality.

Hiking and Cycling Routes

A marked hiking route is 3.7 kilometres long in total. It starts at Plaça de Sant Sebastià, passes through the Crucifici and ends at the Sant Miquel de la Tosca Hermitage.

Another route runs from El Vilosell to Vilanova de Prades. Along this route, it is possible to continue the ascent to Punta del Curull.

Several marked routes lead from El Vilosell through the landscapes and secluded corners of the Serra de la Llena and through nearby areas.

The Ruta de les cabanes de volta del Vilosell is 7 kilometres long and designed as a cycling and hiking route.

The El Vilosell section of the Ruta de les Cabanes de Volta includes nine additional shelters. This section also includes other dry-stone structures that can be visited. Its starting point is 1.2 kilometres from the Sant Sebastià Hermitage.

Other places within the same overarching destination include Rubió, Riu De Cerdanya, Tiurana, Sarroca De Lleida, Puigverd d'Agramunt, Fórnols, Sarroca De Bellera and Boldís Sobirà.

Wine and Local Connections

Tomàs Cusiné winery has its winemaking facilities in a manor house. This building formerly housed the El Vilosell wine and olive oil cooperative. Its current use for winemaking is therefore in a building that previously served the local wine and olive oil cooperative.

The Tomàs Cusiné winery shop sells wines from D.O. Costers del Segre. These wines are produced by Tomàs Cusiné.
