Vilanova De La Barca – Nature on the Segre and History

Vilanova De La Barca is home to Espai Natura Sot del Fuster, a riverine natural area along the Segre. It is one of the last remaining woodland areas in the Urgell plain.

Nature

Shortly before crossing the Segre, a path branches off to the left from Vilanova De La Barca. Follow this path northwards near the riverbank to Sot del Fuster. A circular route leads from Vilanova De La Barca via Torrelameu and Corbins. It continues to the confluence of the Noguera Ribagorçana and the Segre before leading back to Vilanova De La Barca.

History

The Trinxeres del Tossal Roig are a machine-gun nest or observation point with an evacuation trench. From April 1938 onwards, the evacuation trench formed part of the Republican Army's first line of defence on the left bank of the Segre.

The Trinxeres de Les Coves comprised a machine-gun nest and an evacuation trench. The machine-gun nest protected the area between Pla d’en Ramon and les Llacunes, while the evacuation trench was connected to the emplacements for light weapons.

The Església Vella was severely damaged by the 1938 bombardment. Renovation work began in 2016; the surviving parts were restored and a new roof was built.

The Ermita de la Mare de Déu de Montserrat in Vilanova De La Barca was built in the 1940s after the Spanish Civil War. It was constructed together with numerous residential buildings.

The T-26B tank was recovered from the Segre in 1982 after sinking during the failed offensive in August 1938. It was subsequently placed on Plaça de la Pau in Vilanova De La Barca.
