Discover Escaló: Towers, Vila Closa and Hiking Trails

The fully preserved Torre de guaita d’Escaló, also known as el Castell, stands directly on a rock and is approximately 15 metres high.

The medieval watchtower Torre de l’Escaló is located above Escaló at the entrance to Vall d’Àneu; from there, panoramic views extend across the valley, the surrounding area and the walled settlement of Escaló.

A 0.2 km uphill route leads from Escaló to the Torre d’Escaló and is listed in the official hiking trail plan of Parc Natural de l’Alt Pirineu.

For a tour, various historical points can be linked through these local landmarks: the rock with the tower, the walled settlement and the route leading up to the Torre d’Escaló. The short stated distance therefore stands alongside the medieval structures and the location at the entrance to Vall d’Àneu.

Culture

The Centre d'interpretació de la Vila Closa d'Escaló explains the medieval structure of the walled settlement.

The settlement developed from a main street, is entered through one of two gateways and dates back to the 13th century.

The combination of the main street, entrance gates and enclosed settlement area makes Vila Closa comprehensible as a distinct historical structure. In the southern part, the preserved arcades, the mill and the washhouse complement these local features along the course of the Escart River.

Outside the walled settlement, the church of Santa Helena was built in 1623 and is often incorrectly referred to as Santa María.

The church has a single-nave layout, a semicircular apse and a barrel vault.

Five medieval arcades have been preserved on Carrer Major in the southern part of Escaló.

In the southern part of the walled settlement, there is access to a mill and a washhouse on the Escart River.

The Monestir de Sant Pere del Burgal was founded in 859 as a centre of monastic and spiritual life according to the Rule of Saint Benedict.

The 11th-century frescoes in the Monestir de Sant Pere del Burgal depict biblical scenes and figures of saints.

A valuable collection of murals from this site is now housed in the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya in Barcelona.

This work is associated with the Master of Pedret and dated to the 11th or 12th century.

The cultural context thus extends from the medieval settlement structure through the church and monastery to the murals. The various building components, dates and artworks each give the individual stops their own historical connection.

Nature

Collecting mushrooms in the forests around Escaló is considered an activity in autumn.

Among others, rovellons, ceps and llenegues can be found there.

Observing native fauna such as deer, chamois and birds of prey is considered a suitable activity in autumn.
