Discover Araós: Early Medieval Heritage, Castle Remains and Nature
Culture
In the centre of Araós stands Sant Esteve d’Araós. The building is considered early medieval due to its architecture. As a particularly original medieval element, it preserves a semicircular apse with two splayed windows. The centrally arranged window has a lintel, while the second is located on the southern side and has an arched design. The two windows are therefore among the surviving architectural details of the apse and differ both in their position and in their design.
To the west of Araós lies La força d’Araós, near the chapel of Sant Francesc in the Vall Ferrera. The surviving remains include a fortification. Several medieval houses have also been preserved there. At the castle site of La força d’Araós there is also a wall fragment approximately three metres long and a ditch. This ditch partially encloses the summit of the hill. The upper branch of the path from Araós leads to the summit of the castle of La força d’Araós. The surviving structures therefore include both architectural remains of the fortification and medieval houses; the castle site also features the wall fragment and the partially enclosing ditch.
The Festa Major d’Araós is celebrated for Sant Lliser on 1 September or on the first Saturday in September. The date is therefore either 1 September or, depending on the calendar, the first Saturday in September.
Nature
The Bordes de Virós recreational area is located near Araós. It has three picnic tables and includes two springs. A barbecue and an information board are also available. The recreational area therefore provides seating, water sources, barbecue facilities and information in one place.
The Bosc de Virós is a particularly interesting forest area in the Alt Pirineu Natural Park. Below the Ermita de San Francisco de Araós lies the cultivation and thematic garden of Herbes de l’Alt Pirineu. The garden is located in the Alt Pirineu Natural Park at an altitude of 950 metres.
