Peramea: Medieval Village, Castle Ruins and Circular Trail

As a walled village, Peramea preserves its medieval urban layout. The streets are cobbled and lined with arcades. A walk around the village allows these architectural features to be seen directly within its historic setting. The enclosed layout connects the paths through the village with the surviving buildings and insights into its rural past.

Culture

The remains of the castle of the Counts of Pallars are already mentioned in documents from the 10th century. The Torre dels Colomers is a watchtower belonging to the castle, dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. In the upper part of Peramea, the parish church of Sant Cristòfol stands at the foot of the castle ruins. This church contains numerous Baroque carvings. The relics of the Martisants are venerated in Sant Cristòfol on the Feast of the Holy Innocents. Thus, in and around the church, historic architectural elements, sacred art and a local religious tradition come together.

L’Era d’Ortega preserves the traditional structure of a self-sufficient rural family unit. As a centre for information and cultural revitalisation, the site also provides insights into this part of the region’s everyday history. Activities are offered there and are open to everyone. Guided tours present the characteristic features of the walled village and include access to private areas inside the houses. These include a bread oven, an oil mill, a wine cellar and a forge.

The guided tour is therefore not limited to the cobbled streets and arcades. It also leads into the aforementioned private areas inside the houses, where the traditional furnishings of a rural family unit can be seen. The bread oven, oil mill, wine cellar and forge each form part of this insight into the former structure of L’Era d’Ortega.

Nature

Peramea extends across natural terraces known as Pla de Corts. From these natural terraces, there are views of the Collegats gorge and the Serra de la Geganta Adormida. The terraces therefore form a distinct landscape feature within the village and connect views of two prominent destinations in the surrounding area. Baix Pallars is integrated into the Orígens UNESCO Global Geopark.

Circular Hiking Trail

The historic La Geganta adormida circular hiking trail starts and ends in Peramea; its route is 12.3 kilometres long and takes around three and a half hours. The starting point and destination are therefore in the same place. The stated distance and approximate duration provide the hike with a clear timeframe, while its historic character connects it with the history of Peramea. The approximate duration of around three and a half hours places the 12.3-kilometre loop in a specific timeframe; starting and returning in Peramea mark the same starting and ending point of the route for personal day planning.
