Vilamolat de Mur: Towers, Chapels and Geological History

Nature

The Vilamolat geosite offers views of the landslide at Puigcercós Vell. The landscape shows traces of a sea that covered the Tremp Basin 50 million years ago. One route highlights the centuries-old olive trees of Vilamolat. This brings together, at this small Catalan site, a specific landslide, the geological history of the Tremp Basin and a route theme shaped by ancient olive trees.

Culture

The village of Vilamolat de Mur is home to two Romanesque towers: Torre Gasol and Torre Ginebrell. Torre Gasol is located in the former territory of Mur and today belongs to the municipality of Castell de Mur in Pallars Jussà. Torre Ginebrell is also a Romanesque tower in the village of Vilamolat de Mur. It formed part of the defensive line of Castell de Mur Castle. Torre Ginebrell has been restored; parking is available by the roadside.

Two chapels are also among the village's named buildings. Casa Miret contains a chapel dedicated to Mare de Déu del Roser. Can Josep, also known as Can Castells, contains a chapel dedicated to Sant Miquel. The different dedications are each associated with a specific building in Vilamolat de Mur. Thus, the village's built heritage preserves a former defensive function and religious dedications as distinct historical traces side by side.

History

The public school in Casa Josep operated from 1860 to 1960. This period is part of the local history, as is the Cabanera principal Urgell–Pirineu, which runs through Vilamolat de Mur. The livestock trail enabled transhumance from the plains of Lleida to the Pyrenees. The historical function of the route lies in this connection between the lowlands and the high mountains.

Geographical Setting

In the vicinity of Vilamolat de Mur are Castell de Girbeta, a named and mapped castle, and Mont-rebei, a named and mapped ruin. The named and mapped peaks Tossal de l'Osca, la Torreta, Sant Alís and Cap del Ras are also located nearby. Each of the four peak names refers to a separate named and mapped peak in this immediate area.

In the wider regional surroundings of Vilamolat de Mur are Castell de Viacamp, a named and mapped castle, and la Pardina, a named and mapped ruin. Thus, the geographical setting of the named castles, ruins and peaks extends from the immediate vicinity to the wider regional area, without equating these areas.
