History and Architecture

Seu Vella invites you to explore an exemplary monument. The building illustrates the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture in Catalonia. Construction of the first Christian cathedral of Seu Vella began in 1193.

Romanesque and Gothic architecture here represent more than abstract periods: at Seu Vella, their transition can be traced in a specific building. Its long construction history connects its beginnings in 1193 with a monument whose architectural development extends into the Gothic idiom.

The Palau de la Paeria is housed in the former Palace of Sanaüja, an important work of civil Romanesque architecture. In 1980, it was declared a National Historic Monument.

The Palau de la Paeria complements the history of sacred architecture with a secular building. Its classification as a work of civil Romanesque architecture points to an architectural function different from that of the cathedral. At the same time, the former Palace of Sanaüja preserves its connection with an earlier history of use.

Museum and Cultural Heritage

The Museu de Lleida was created through the merger of two museums with archaeological and art-historical collections. Its permanent exhibition comprises almost 1,000 objects. These include archaeological objects, paintings and sculptures. Tapestries, clothing, furniture and coins are also represented. The permanent exhibition presents history and cultural heritage from prehistory to the 20th century.

The collection therefore brings together different types of objects and periods in a single permanent exhibition. Alongside fine art, it also features everyday and utilitarian objects such as clothing, furniture and coins. Architecture and the History of Religious Orders

The Church of Santa Maria de Gardeny is Romanesque and dates from the second half of the 12th century. It has a rectangular nave. Its barrel vault is pointed, and its apse is polygonal.

The individual structural elements give the church a clearly articulated architectural profile. The rectangular nave, pointed barrel vault and polygonal apse identify different elements of the same Romanesque building. Its dating to the second half of the 12th century is also part of this classification.

The fortified complex of Gardeny includes a two-storey keep. The keep served as a storage area on the lower floor. Its upper floor was the living quarters of the order's monks. The fortified complex is one of the few purpose-built examples of Templar military architecture.

The two levels of the keep are clearly distinguished by their former functions: the storage area was located below, with the monks' living quarters above. Together with the fortifications, this makes the connection between religious life and military architecture visible.

Nature

Anyone looking for a nature-oriented side of Lleida will find La Mitjana, one of the most extensive and best-preserved riparian woodland areas in all of Catalonia.

La Mitjana thus represents a landscape that clearly differs from the city's buildings, collections and festival traditions. The term riparian woodland refers to a type of natural environment shaped by water, while the area's size and state of preservation describe its special significance within Catalonia.

Snail Cuisine and Festival Culture

Snails are a long-established symbol of Lleida's traditional cuisine. The Aplec del Caragol is a gastronomic festival centred on snail cuisine and takes place in the city of Lleida at the end of May.

The Aplec del Caragol includes a publicly accessible tasting area. It offers several snail dishes or types of snails at popular prices.

The festival culture thus combines the traditional food with a specific urban occasion. The date at the end of May and the public tasting area are just as much a part of the character of the Aplec del Caragol as the selection of several snail dishes or types of snails.
