Tor: Vall de Tor, Sant Pere and Castell de Tor
Nature and valley
Mouflons (Ovis aries / O. gmelini) are found in scrubland and pasture areas in the Vall de Tor. The Vall de Tor valley is home to the striking rocky outcrop Roc de Llumaneres.
Townscape and tradition
Tor is one of the settlements in the Altes Nogueres landscape unit. The original urban structure of these settlements has been particularly well preserved. Tor is also regarded as one of the most distinctive settlements in this unit.
The local name “la canya de les Bones Dones” refers to the cave of the same name. It is located above Tor, to the left of the Barranc de Sant Ambrós. According to legend, enchanted women lived in this cave.
Culture and history
The parish church of Sant Pere de Tor stands in the centre of Tor. It is an extraordinary building featuring architectural forms from the 10th century. These forms are particularly visible in the apse and bell tower. The bell tower is approximately truncated-pyramidal in shape. Sant Pere de Tor may also contain pre-Romanesque elements.
The ruins of Sant Pere del Roc de Tor lie on a ridge above Tor. The remains of Castell de Tor are located on the same summit. A ditch cut artificially into the rock separates the two sites.
The castle of Castell de Tor stands on a hill above Tor. It is situated at an altitude of more than 1,600 metres. The former castle retains a round tower, an area located to its east, and a distinctive castle ditch. The fortification of Castell de Tor is thought to have allowed the valley to be controlled. Via Port de Cabús, the valley provided a comparatively easy connection between Andorra and Pallars.
Routes and access
The route from Alins to Port de Cabús on the border with Andorra passes through the valley of Tor. It runs along a road and a forest track. This forest track is not suitable for cars. Access to Sant Pere del Roc de Tor follows the same route as access to Castell de Tor.
For orientation on site, the distinction between the routes mentioned is crucial: the connection from Alins to Port de Cabús changes from the road to the forest track, while Sant Pere del Roc de Tor and Castell de Tor share the same access route. Sant Ambròs de Tor remains separate from these; there, the described access leads across fields beside the river. Thus, the three historical reference points are situated in different routes and landscape areas.
The ruins of Sant Ambròs de Tor lie in isolation in a forest. The ruins are located approximately 3 km north of Tor, along the river. There is no clear path to Sant Ambròs de Tor. Access requires crossing fields along the river.
