Travesseres – Church, Cultural Heritage and Mountain Terrace
Landscape
Travesseres is the southernmost village in the municipality of Lles. The village is located in the southern part of the municipality of Lles, around its church, which is a filial church of the parish of Lles. Travesseres lies on the first mountain terrace beyond the Senillers gorge. The location of the village thus combines its municipal affiliation with a clearly described hillside and terrace setting.
Church and History
Sant Jaume is the patron saint of Travesseres. Sant Jaume de Travesseres is a rectangular church with a pointed vault. The present-day building of Sant Jaume de Travesseres probably dates from the 18th century. Three buttresses on the south wall ensure the stability of the building, which is strongly affected by its hillside location. The church therefore combines a clearly recognisable architectural form with structural details connected to its position on the slope.
The National Art Museum of Catalonia owns a carving of Christ in Majesty from Sant Jaume de Travesseres, with inventory number 65 504. The Castell de Travesseres is listed in the catalogue of Cultural Assets of National Interest (BCIN) under Lles de Cerdanya. In 1313, the Castell was expressly mentioned in a vassal oath that Gastó I, Count of Foix, swore to Sanç I, King of Majorca, for the lands of Donasà. No remains of the former Castell de Travesseres survive today. The documented history of the village thus extends from the medieval mention of the Castell to the church that survives today and the preserved representation in the museum.
Culture
The Balneari de Senillers is located in the municipal area of Lles de Cerdanya. The Balneari collects and supplies water from five springs. Letters by Maragall can be read in front of the Balneari de Senillers building. Letters by Josep Pijoan can also be read there. In front of the building, five poems from “Pirinenques” are also available to read; Maragall wrote them during his stay there. Thus, in addition to the springs, the building is associated with specific literary texts by the named authors. The Festa Major of Travesseres is scheduled for the fourth weekend of July.
Hiking and Cycling
TC259 Martinet–Travesseres is a circular hiking trail connecting Martinet and Travesseres. The route is 7.9 km long and has an elevation gain of 250 metres. Hiking trail TC053 leads from Lles through Travesseres, Ardòvol, El Vilar and Viliella. BTT route 18 is called “Travesseres–Lles–Mussa” and is challenging. The route information thus includes both the circular trail between Martinet and Travesseres and the sequence of several villages along the route from Lles, as well as the named BTT connection.
