Nature at Estany

Estany d'Ivars i Vila-sana is one of Catalonia's most significant wetlands for birdwatching. More than 210 species can be observed over the course of the year. A nature trail of approximately 6 km runs around the lake. Viewpoints and birdwatching hides divide the route; there are also landing stages, information boards, picnic areas and information points. These facilities make the circular route a practical way to access the landscape, bringing observation points, rest areas and explanatory stations together within a compact thematic setting.

The Camí de Sant Jaume from Anglesola to Palau d'Anglesola also passes through Ivars d'Urgell and Estany d'Ivars i Vila-sana. The wetland is therefore not only part of the natural scenery, but also part of the route of this pilgrimage trail.

Sacred Architecture and History

The present Església de Sant Andreu was built between 1785 and 1790 on the site of the former Romanesque church. The church has three naves. The central nave is covered by a cove vault, while the side naves have groin vaults. The construction period, earlier building and vault forms give the church interior several clearly distinguishable historical and architectural layers.

The present building of the Ermita de la Mare de Déu d'Horta dates from the second half of the 17th century. The chapel has a single-nave body, an apse with a large semi-dome and an octagonal bell tower attached to the façade. The history of this religious building also includes the procession of the Mare de Déu de l'Horta in 1825, when worshippers from more than forty places in the comarca gathered.

Literature and Festival Calendar

The Ruta literaria Maria-Mercè Marçal literary route in Ivars d'Urgell opened in 2021. It complements the landscape and historical points of interest with a literary connection. The Festa major de Sant Andreu is celebrated on 30 November; most of the festival takes place on the following weekend. For planning such dates, the specific festival dates and the schedule of the programme are crucial.

Railway Station and Regional Destinations

Ivars d'Urgell has a station on the R12 railway line. The cultural surroundings include the Museu Comarcal de l'Urgell and the Cal Talaveró Centre d'Art, both museums in the vicinity of Ivars d'Urgell. Muralla de Tárrega is a historic site in the surrounding area, while Monasterio de Mas Colom is a monastery located near Ivars d'Urgell.
