Discover Vielha: Culture, Trails and Mountain Landscapes

Vielha e Mijaran lies in the Val d’Aran Biosphere Reserve, which comprises nine municipalities, including Vielha e Mijaran. The old town of Vielha is located near the confluence of the Nere and Garona rivers.

Culture

Sant Miquèu de Vielha was built in the 12th and 13th centuries in the transitional style between Romanesque and Gothic. The bell tower dates from the 16th century and has an appearance reminiscent of a fortified structure. Inside, Sant Miquèu de Vielha houses a Romanesque figure of Christ from the mature period of the Erill la Vall workshop, as well as an outstanding example of 12th-century Romanesque sculpture. Buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries have also been preserved in the old town.

Era fabrica dera Lan is a representative example of the small textile industries that emerged from the mid-19th century on both slopes of the Central Pyrenees. The facility used the power of the Nere River to operate its machinery. This machinery processed natural wool into yarn suitable for hand knitting.

The Museu dera Val d’Aran is located in the Tor deth Generau Martinhon. A fortress dating from the early 17th century has been preserved there and is representative of Aranese architecture from that period. The permanent exhibition uses archaeological, art-historical and ethnographic objects to tell the story of the historical development of the Val d’Aran up to the present day. The museum presents its cultural heritage on three levels: through images; through texts as well as audiovisual and acoustic materials; and through in-depth exhibition guides, catalogues and other materials. For children, the activities include a treasure hunt with tasks, puzzle games and a reconstruction of the Victòria mines.

Trails and Landscapes

The Camín Reiau leads from Vielha in one direction to Naut Aran and in the other direction to Mijaran and Baish Aran. BTT Route 28 begins in Vielha, follows the Camin Reiau and is designated as a linear route with a low level of difficulty. The Camino Natural del Port de Vielha begins on the outskirts of Vielha near a rest area with barbecue facilities, bicycle parking and bicycle parking, as well as an information board about the route.

The Camino Natural del Port de Vielha descends along the Nere River and ends near the southern entrance of the Vielha Tunnel. The alpine landscape around Vielha is dominated by Montcorbison, which is approximately 2,176 m high. The municipality of Vielha has seven picnic areas with tables and barbecue facilities.

Activities

The main activities at the Palai de Gèu de Vielha include ice skating and swimming. The Palai de Gèu has a 1,456 m² ice rink as well as two heated swimming pools, including a semi-Olympic pool measuring 25 × 12 m.

Ski touring in Vielha can be undertaken independently or accompanied by experienced mountain guides. The Tuc deth Pòrt de Vielha is considered a classic ski-touring destination in the Val d’Aran.

Getting There

ALSA offers public bus connections to Vielha e Mijaran, including a direct connection from Barcelona as well as regular daily connections from Barcelona and Lleida.

Restaurants in Vielha serve Òlha aranesa, a traditional soup with meat, pulses, pasta and vegetables.
