Discover Gausac: Romanesque Art and Mountain Panoramas

Gausac combines narrow old-town lanes, Romanesque art and mountain panoramas. Romanesque details in Sant Martí de Gausac

A particular focus is Sant Martí de Gausac. It contains a cylindrical Romanesque baptismal font with carved iconography. This iconography connects the font with those in Casau and Escunhau. The cylindrical shape and carved motifs draw attention to the design of the baptismal font. Inside, next to the exit door, there is also a Romanesque holy-water font decorated with stems and leaves. Details like these give a visit to the village a calm, attentive perspective: it is not only the overall view that matters, but also the forms and motifs that reveal themselves only on closer inspection.

Sant Martí de Gausac is considered one of the finest examples of Aranese Gothic architecture. Romanesque and Gothic forms come together within Sant Martí de Gausac. On the wall of the narthex at the entrance there is also a carved Christ, which may have come from a tympanum of the former Romanesque church. The route Paseo de contrastes por Vielha leads via Vielha, Vilac, the Pònt de Beussa and Gausac back to Vielha. In Gausac, it passes through steep lanes and offers mountain panoramas. Steep lanes and a paved track mark two different sections of the route. The route Ruta Bosque de Baricauba begins in Gausac and follows a paved track uphill to the Montcorbison forest, known as Baricauba.

A small road also leads from Gausac to the lush, densely wooded Baricauba forest. From Gausac, there are beautiful views of the Vielha Pass. The Gausac-Casau-Vielha hiking route leads to the Font de Santa Maria, where hikers can drink and refresh themselves.

Horses graze in the meadows around Gausac. During the summer months, there are also municipal swimming pools in a natural setting with beautiful views.

During the Hèsta Major de Gausac, a procession takes place on 16 August from Sant Martin to the main square.
