Betlan: Village Church, Viewpoint and Historic Paths

The few houses of Betlan are grouped around a large square, which is enclosed on the west by the parish church dedicated to Sant Pèir. The buildings frame the square, while the church gives it a clearly recognizable spatial structure. The parish church of Betlan dates from the 11th century. Known as the Església de Sant Pere (Sant Pèir), it has a nave covered by a barrel vault and a semicircular apse.

Landscape

At an elevation of 1,041 m, Betlan lies on a small raised plain on the right bank of the Garonne. Cultivated fields and meadows surround the village and therefore reach directly up to the built-up area. The location combines a raised plain with the riverbank and utilized open spaces, without implying a larger settlement pattern. The Mirador de Betlan offers views of the villages of the Terçon de Marcatosa. Its view therefore takes in several villages in this area and extends beyond the immediate built-up surroundings. A mirador is a viewpoint useful when planning a trip; for such destinations, current trail conditions and the planned route can be checked before setting out.

Culture

At the entrance to Betlan, a marker on the road points to the cave associated with the local legend of the giant Mandronius. Betlan celebrates its Festa Major on 5 August. For events held on a fixed date, checking the date is part of preparing before departure and coordinating other travel plans.

Further architectural details add to the picture of the village. At Casa Pishon, the original wooden door has been preserved, although it is damaged. The Antiga escola in Betlan is a rectangular building made of irregular exposed stone, with a four-sided slate roof. The wooden door displays preserved original material, while the former school is defined by its basic shape, masonry and roof form. The preserved original wooden door and the stone school building represent different forms of historic building fabric in the village. Historic Paths

The Camin Reiau follows historic paths that once connected the villages of the Val d’Aran and were already used by the Romans in antiquity. Getting There

Betlan can be reached via the N-230; near Aubèrt, an approximately 1.5 km-long paved track branches off and leads into the village.
