Rialp: Medieval Townscape, Nature and Traditions

Rialp preserves a medieval character in its town centre. Arcades can be found particularly along Carrer del Mig.

Townscape and Culture

The parish church of Mare de Déu de Valldeflors has a single-nave layout. It also features an octagonal bell tower. Its roof is pyramid-shaped. The parish church of Mare de Déu de Valldeflors serves as a venue for Rialp’s summer music programme. Every summer, the Associació Rialp Musical presents a varied, high-quality music programme there. Thus, the church’s architectural features and the summer cultural programme both take centre stage at the same location. The town centre and the parish church therefore preserve different visible and musical facets of local tradition.

Nature and Paths

Part of the municipality of Rialp lies within the Parc Natural de l’Alt Pirineu. The Parc Natural de l’Alt Pirineu includes the Camí de la Canerilla as a circular route. The route is 2.6 km long. The stated duration is 45 minutes. The circular route is considered very easy. Its circular format leads back to the starting point, while the distance and time indication clearly specify the scope of this route.

Rialp has an extensive network of traditional paths. This network is currently being restored. The paths are also being signposted. The work is intended to make hiking easier. In addition to the individual circular route, the municipality therefore also includes a larger network of paths. The ongoing work covers both restoration and signposting.

The route “De poble a poble per la vall d’Àssua” is a circular route measuring 13.3 km. It connects Rialp, Surp, Escàs, Caregue and la Mola de Sall. Its course therefore includes several specifically named places in the vall d’Àssua.

The route “La volta per la vall del Noguera Pallaresa” is a 20.1 km-long circular route. It begins in Rialp and ends in Rialp. The start and finish of this route are therefore in the same place.

Rialp can be reached directly via the C-13 road towards Vielha. The road connection is signposted in the direction of Vielha.

Traditions

Rialp has preserved the dance of the Rigodons. It is mainly performed on Plaça de Dalt. During the Festa Major on 15 August, the dance is part of the festival programme. It is also performed on 26 September for Sant Cosme i Sant Damià. The dance is therefore associated with two specific dates in Rialp’s annual calendar.

The carnival celebrations in Rialp begin on Sunday morning with the hanging of the Carnestoltes. They continue until Tuesday. A large dance brings them to a close. The proceedings therefore run from the start on Sunday morning over several days to the concluding dance.

The Calderada, a communal dish, is one of Rialp’s carnival traditions. It adds a culinary tradition to the festive proceedings.

La Mola de Bellera preserves its mill machinery in good condition. The preserved components include channels. Flour distributors are also part of it. Millstones have also been preserved. The collection likewise includes a lifting crane and a hopper.
