Talavera: Castle Traces, Old Town and Circular Route
Talavera is situated on the slope of a mountain. On the ridge stands the Sant Salvador church of Talavera, just a few metres from the houses in the town centre.
Culture and History
The history of the town is reflected in Talavera through sacred, military and urban traces. Talavera Castle has been documented since 1075. Its remains are located at the highest point of the town and merge into the structure of a house. The castle remains therefore represent both the medieval fortification and its subsequent incorporation into the existing development.
Sant Salvador contains a stone sarcophagus with an exterior relief depicting an eagle and a bell. The lid of the sarcophagus features reclining figures of a knight and a lady wearing 14th-century clothing. The exterior relief and the lid thus show different motifs from the same tomb: animals and a bell on the border, and the two figures on the cover.
In Talavera’s old town, the narrow Família-So Street corresponds to the former Jewish quarter. The Volta del carrer Major probably served as a gateway into the town in the 16th and 17th centuries, when Talavera’s walled town centre expanded downhill. Since that time, the street layout of Talavera’s old town has changed very little. The street, gateway and wall area thus form part of a historical structure that can still be discerned in today’s old town.
Not far from the town of Talavera, on the road to Guàrdia Lada, are the remains of a former tower with a circular, slightly conical ground plan. More than half of the structure has collapsed, but its appearance still largely reveals its medieval form. Despite the collapse, the surviving ground plan and remaining shape point to the building’s former appearance.
Festivals and Routes
The Festa Major de Talavera takes place on the last weekend in May. When planning to attend the festival, the current event details should be checked before travelling, as the specific weekend is essential for planning.
A road branches off the N-II at Hostalets (Ribera d’Ondara). One turn-off leads to Pallerols, while the road continues via Pavia and Talavera towards Conca de Barberà.
