Culture and History

The architectural ensemble of Vallferosa comprises the Torre de Vallferosa, the village and the church of Sant Pere. Radiocarbon dating commissioned by the Generalitat dates the Torre de Vallferosa to the 8th century. The tower has a circular ground plan, is 33 metres high and has a diameter of 13 metres. The former village of Vallferosa lies in ruins and was inhabited until around 1939. A washhouse and a water fountain have been preserved in the former village.

The site thus combines the individual tower with the former settlement and the church of Sant Pere. The preserved elements of the former village stand alongside the ruins and make it clear that Vallferosa is not merely an isolated building. The historical classification of the tower, its unusual round shape and the surviving elements of the village are among the diverse details of this ensemble.

The historic site also includes the former parish church of Sant Pere de Vallferosa. It was founded in 1698 by the Jesuits of Bethlehem in Barcelona. Every year in April, the residents celebrate the Festa de Sant Marc i Santes Creus at Sant Pere de Vallferosa.

Landscape

The area around Vallferosa lies at an altitude of 600 to 900 metres and forms a hilly agroforestry mosaic landscape. The monastery of Sant Celdoni i Sant Ermenter is located in the area around Vallferosa. The summit of Pinós is also nearby.

The elevations between 600 and 900 metres give the landscape a clearly defined spatial framework. Its agroforestry mosaic structure represents a juxtaposition of different landscape elements, while its hilly form characterises the surrounding area. The monastery of Sant Celdoni i Sant Ermenter and the summit of Pinós are two named destinations in the immediate vicinity of Vallferosa.

Other places in the surrounding area include the ruins of Castell de Calaf and Castell de Boixadors. The summit of Tossal de Puigferrers is also located near Vallferosa. The summit of Turó de Passaportella is likewise in this area.

The Museu Diocesà i Comarcal is located in the wider regional area around Vallferosa. The summit of Biosca Alt is also situated in this wider regional area.

Getting Around

The Route de Vallferosa can be completed on foot in half a day. At both points where the Route de Vallferosa crosses the LV-3005 road, there is space to park the vehicle easily.
