Alfés: Steppe Landscape, Cultural Heritage and Regional Cuisine

In Alfés, the Timoneda d’Alfés is one of the most authentic examples of the Ebro Basin’s steppe landscape in Catalonia. This landscape is home to Catalonia’s only population of the Alosa becuda. The open steppe landscape shapes the character of the surroundings and combines nature watching with an unusual regional feature. The Secans de Mas de Melons-Alfés route initially passes through the Timoneda d’Alfés, where numerous endangered bird species can be found.

Nature

At the airfield, an information hut operates as a reception point for visitors and as an environmental education centre for the Timoneda d’Alfés. For nature trails and guided activities, it is advisable to check current opening hours or any changes to visiting times before setting out.

Trails

The Secans de Mas de Melons-Alfés route is a long circular route. The full route can be completed by bicycle, car or on foot. The different means of transport allow the route to be experienced in different ways without changing its course as a circular trail. When preparing for longer routes, current trail conditions and any applicable information about the route should be checked.

The Ruta del riu Set runs parallel to the Set River from one end of the municipality of Alfés to the other. It forms part of the GR 3 long-distance trail, which crosses the Catalan hinterland. Thus, alongside the long circular route, there is another trail with its own geographical course: the Ruta del riu Set follows the river and is also integrated into the wider route of the GR 3.

Culture and History

La Vileta in Alfés’s old town includes houses of Arab origin and a former Jewish quarter, with Stars of David depicted on its door lintels. The traces are therefore found not only in individual buildings but also in the traditional structure of the old town.

The church of Sant Pere d’Alfés is one of the churches built at the end of the 13th or beginning of the 14th century in the counties of the province of Lleida; Romanesque forms are still clearly recognisable in Alfés. Sant Pere d’Alfés is a single-nave building with a pointed barrel vault and a semicircular apse. Five of the corbels beneath the eaves of Sant Pere d’Alfés’s apse feature sculpted decoration in the Toulouse tradition.

The Aeròdrom d’Alfés may be considered particularly well preserved. The guided route at the Aeròdrom Militar d’Alfés includes above-ground anti-aircraft positions with gun emplacements and trenches. These include logistical facilities of the former airfield, with a water tank and an armoured fuel store, as well as the former powder magazine. For a guided tour, current dates and times should be checked before travelling.

Cuisine

Orelletes are the most typical and traditional dessert of Alfés and the surrounding area, and are usually eaten in Alfés during major celebrations. Catxipanda is one of the notable dishes of the cuisine of Alfés and the comarca. The two specialities represent different aspects of the regional cuisine: Orelletes belong to the festive tradition, while Catxipanda has been passed down as a significant dish of the local and comarca-wide cuisine.

Getting There

There are no regular public transport services to Alfés; therefore, travelling by car is the most practical option.
