Bellpuig: Culture, Nature and Holiday Apartments
The Sant Bartomeu Monastery in Bellpuig is a transitional monument from the Gothic to the Renaissance period. In 1507, Ramon Folc de Cardona i Anglesola, the lord of Bellpuig, commissioned the monastery. The mausoleum of Ramon Folch de Cardona-Anglesola was created by Giovanni Marigliano da Nola between 1523 and 1528.
Culture
The Church of Sant Nicolau dates from the 16th century. Its architecture combines late Gothic forms with a Renaissance portal. The Festa dels Dolors takes place on the Friday before Good Friday. The Processó dels Dolors in Bellpuig currently consists of six passos depicting notable events from the Passion of Christ.
The Fundació Perelló was founded in 1996 to preserve and promote the work of the sculptor Jaume Perelló. The Fundació Perelló in Bellpuig offers visits by prior appointment.
History
Bellpuig Castle dates back to the 11th century. It was fortified in the 12th century. The few surviving remains of the castle are located on one of the municipality’s higher terraces.
The Bellpuig Tourist Office offers a guided historical route through the old town.
Nature and Trails
The Despoblat dels Eixaders route passes by the Canal d'Urgell. It also runs along a windmill and offers views across the plain. The route is a very easy trail in the southwest of Bellpuig.
The Ruta de les cigonyes is a tourist route through the municipality of Bellpuig for observing storks. Bellpuig is home to storks that nest in the same place all year round. The Seana route leads to the del Bosc or de Bellpuig and de la Plana ponds, as well as to the Seana district.
Activities
Controlled trout fishing is possible year-round in the pond at Parc del Convent. A permit is required for this.
The Bellpuig Camina-Molins de la vall del Corb route connects five water-powered mills. These mills are connected to the Sèquia del Molinar irrigation canal and the Corb River.
The Volager flight school offers trike hang-gliding flights. They last about one hour and are available for one or four people. These flights offer the opportunity to discover the Bellpuig plain and its surroundings.
Pitch & Putt Bellpuig is an 18-hole, par-3 course and belongs to Golf Urgell.
Local Specialties
Bellpuig offers sweets and confectionery made by the Viuda Pifarré factory, which has been operating for more than a century. Some of its products can be sampled. Viuda Pifarré continues to produce Piropos, a hard caramel confection based on guirlache that was developed in 1926.
