Senterada in the Vall Fosca
Landscape and nature
Senterada lies at the beginning of the so-called Vall Fosca in the Catalan Pyrenees. The village is located near the Flamisell River. This location describes the spatial connection between the village and the valley, as well as its proximity to the river. The municipality of Senterada has mountain biking routes. Their difficulty levels vary, so the routes are not limited to a single level of difficulty. The area around Senterada favours abundant fishing, especially for river trout. Thus, alongside the paths, the river and fish fauna are also part of the landscape described.
“La Travessa dels Voltors” suggests observation points. These points are used to observe scavenging birds. There are two observatories in Senterada for this purpose. Additional feeding stations, known as PAS, have been set up at Sant Roc and are used to observe scavenging birds. The designation PAS therefore refers to the feeding stations at Sant Roc, while the two observatories and the suggested observation points form the broader framework for birdwatching.
Routes and paths
The guide “Senterada Roca i Aigua” suggests nine climbing routes. The routes have varying difficulty levels. The number of climbing routes and their different difficulty levels are specific details provided by this guide. El Camí dels Sants suggests circular routes. These circular routes allow visitors to see churches and hermitages. The route names Senterada and the neighbouring municipalities as destinations. In this way, the route connects the local municipality with the named neighbouring municipalities and leads to religious buildings of different kinds.
Culture and history
Santa Maria de Gràcia is located approximately in the centre of Senterada. The church has Romanesque origins and preserves elements of its medieval past. The Ermita de Sant Víctor de Senterada is included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. It was formerly a cemetery chapel. The chapel stands on a rocky outcrop above the village. Its present classification as part of the architectural heritage therefore exists alongside its former function as a cemetery chapel and its location above the village.
Sant Aventí de Cérvoles is a Romanesque church. It is located in the municipality of Senterada. It is protected as local cultural heritage. The Dolmen de la Casa Encantada belongs to a group of megalithic monuments. These monuments are associated with various communities that once lived in the comarca. The dolmen and the Romanesque churches thus point to different historical forms: megalithic monuments on the one hand and protected religious buildings on the other.
The monastery of Santa Maria de Senterada is also known as Santa Grata. The first known documentary mention of the monastery dates from 21 June 823. The former Fàbrica de Mantes in Senterada supplied Pallars Jussà, Pallars Sobirà and part of Noguera with blankets. This supply continued for a century. The Fira d’Artesanies de Senterada takes place annually.
