Arfa: Camí de la Freita and Historical Landmarks

History and Architecture

The Pou de Gel d'Arfa tells the story of a historical form of supply. The structure was built to supply the canons of La Seu d’Urgell with ice and dates from 1641. For more than a century, the Pou de Gel stored ice produced by natural freezing in its basins. The basins, the natural formation of ice, and the supply of the canons are part of its recorded function.

A second historical focal point is Sant Serni. The church's distinctive octagonal bell tower decisively shapes the appearance of Arfa. It was built in 1707, while the Sant Serni church is attributed to the 12th century. This building therefore brings together a later bell tower and the church's earlier classification in ecclesiastical history.

Paths and Water

The Camino Natural de Les Mines includes a 2.4-kilometre branch leading to the Ramal del Funicular and the Arfa River. The branch is largely flat and pleasant to walk.

The Camino Natural de Les Mines near Arfa also has facilities for competitive whitewater canoe slalom events. The facilities belong to the same named route as the flat branch, but serve a different purpose.
