Anglesola: Churches, Cultural Heritage and Agricultural Landscapes

In Anglesola stands the church of Sant Pau de Narbona, built at the end of the 16th century on the site of an earlier Romanesque church. Its furnishings include a Saint Anne altar dating from 1524, restored in 1993, and a Churrigueresque altar from 1726. The two altars represent different periods of creation within the furnishing history of the church of Sant Pau de Narbona. The latter is dedicated to the Holy Cross and contains relics of the True Cross, known as les Santes Virtuts.

Culture and Traditions

The Espai del Carro recreates the now-disappeared trades of the carter and the saddler. Both were closely connected with vehicles and the animals that pulled them. Another historical testimony, the Creu de Terme, is a Gothic-Renaissance wayside cross from the 15th century. The Festa de la Caritat is an annual tradition held in May in honour of the Holy Cross. During the celebration, blessed bread rolls are distributed to everyone who takes part. For events held on a fixed date, it is advisable to check the current date before travelling.

Landscape and Birdlife

The Anglesola-Vilagrassa protected area is an agricultural landscape in the Lleida plain. Extensive cereal cultivation characterises the area, while it also preserves remnants of traditional dryland farming, such as olive and vine cultivation. Anglesola-Vilagrassa is part of the Natura 2000 network and has been designated a Special Protection Area for birds. The Anglesola-Vilagrassa route passes through cereal fields where, among other species, corn buntings, partridges, quails and, in particular, Montagu's harriers can be observed. Those who explore such landscapes can experience the field sections and the bird species mentioned as different facets of the same agricultural landscape.

Routes

The Anglesola i les Cases de Barbens PR-C97 route is very flat, runs mostly between fruit trees, crosses the Canal d'Urgell twice and passes through Anglesola. Its starting point is on Avinguda de Catalunya, in front of the Museu del Carro de Pagès. Current trail conditions should be checked before setting out on this route.

The PR-C64 route is also very flat and comprises clearly distinct sections of dryland farming and irrigated land. It leads to the historic and monumental town centres of Bellpuig and Anglesola. On this route, the path reaches Anglesola via Plaça Lourdes and then leaves the town along a broad track. The two routes showcase different landscape elements: fruit trees and the Canal d'Urgell characterise one route, while dryland farming and irrigated land characterise the other.

Geographical Setting

The A-2 motorway from Barcelona to Lleida runs along the southern edge of the municipality of Anglesola. In the east of the municipality, the C-53 regional road runs from Tàrrega to Balaguer.
