Torrefarrera: Neoclassical Church and Medieval Traces

In Torrefarrera stands the Església Parroquial de la Santa Creu, built in the mid-18th century in the neoclassical style and considered the only church of this style in Segrià. Next to the Església, a silo carved into the sandstone was discovered. It is probably also of Muslim origin. The lower section of the church also features a wall of Muslim construction.

Culture and History

El Convent o Edifici de l’ensenyança dates from 1799 and was designed by the architect Agapit Lamarca. The building is located about 500 metres south of the town centre, in the direction of Lleida. Until the Civil War, it served as a school for all the children of Torrefarrera. It was used by a community of cloistered nuns of the Order of l’Estonnac.

In Malpartit there is a chapel under the patronage of the Santíssima Trinitat. The Fita dels Quatre Termes is a boundary marker at the intersection of the four municipal areas of Torrefarrera, Malpartit, Rosselló and Alpicat.

La Grallera preserves evidence of medieval agricultural facilities in a sandstone block measuring approximately 100 square metres. Clearly recognisable features include a cistern opening with an overflow, a door and steps carved into the stone.

The Torre Grallera has been documented at this site since 1150. For the year 1192, the existence of houses referred to as "in castellum et villam que vocatur Gralleram in Segriano" is mentioned there. The former castle stood at the summit of the Tossal de la Pleta and was known as Castellblanc de Llitera. In 1174, Count Ermengol VII of Urgell transferred it to Joan d’Albesa.

Activities and Trails

The Torrefarrera Pump Track is a public 1,800-square-metre cycling track on Avinguda Europa, opposite Institut Joan Solà. It consists of two enclosed dirt circuits of different sizes and difficulty levels. The enclosed facility therefore combines a precisely designated area with two differently sized track sections and specified difficulty levels.

The Torrefarrera Street Art Festival is a mural-painting festival held every year. One route reaches the old centre of Torrefarrera and passes between the Santa Creu church and the town hall. Its course therefore lies between two named points in the old centre: the Santa Creu church and the town hall.

Landscape and Nature

In the Partida del Molí stands the Plataner centenari, a large plane tree with a diameter of 3.78 metres; it is located 400 metres along the Camí de Benavent. The Pantà de Serrallarga in the Partida del Secà de Torrefarrera forms its own ecosystem, with birdlife and vegetation among the cultivated fields.
