Sidamon: Archaeology, Architectural History and Routes

History

The Iberian archaeological site of Tossal de les Tenalles is located in the municipality of Sidamon. The earliest traces of settlement date from the Late Bronze Age, from the 9th to the 8th century BC, and the settlement remained continuously inhabited until the 2nd century BC. The excavation of Tossal de les Tenalles in 1915 was considered the first scientific archaeological intervention at an Ilergetan settlement.

Culture

The original parish church of Sant Bartomeu de Sidamon has been documented since the 12th century. It was built on the site of the former castle of Sidamon and the original temple. Sidamon is also home to the Escoles Municipals school building from 1921, designed by Ignasi de Vilallonga Casañes.

Another historic building is Cal Miqueló. It was probably built between 1782 and 1785 and has a side gallery with round arches, as well as large stone surrounds around the main openings. The three buildings therefore belong to different historical periods.

Events

Since 2018, the Jornada dels Amics del Tossal de les Tenalles has been held annually. The programme includes various talks and educational workshops and is linked to the history of the Iberian archaeological site. For events with talks and educational workshops, it is advisable to check the current event dates and start times before travelling.

Nature

La Pineda de Sidamon is a recreational area planted with pine trees, located about 300 metres outside the village on the Camí de la Serra.

La Pineda de Sidamon is equipped for cooking and relaxation and has barbecue areas, running water and service facilities. Prior reservation is required for use. For recreational areas with barbecue facilities and running water, travellers should check the current opening and usage times before travelling.

Routes

The Ruta de la Fita Alta begins in Sidamon, is 3 kilometres long and takes about 55 minutes on foot. For routes with a specified walking time, the day's excursion planning can take the approximate duration into account as a time frame.

The Ruta de la Serra is a 20.1-kilometre circular cycling route that passes through Sidamon.

The 40-kilometre Ruta dels Canals de Regadiu is a driving route focusing on irrigated agriculture, nature and cultural heritage. It begins in Mollerussa and continues through Sidamon. This places a short walking route, a circular cycling route and a longer driving route covering agricultural, natural and cultural themes alongside one another. For circular cycling routes and driving routes, route length, route itinerary and the respective starting point are usual factors to consider when planning an excursion. For circular cycling routes and driving routes, checking current route conditions is part of the usual preparation before travelling.
